Diagnostic & Treatment Recognized

Milford Hospital’s Diagnostic and Treatment Center for the third consecutive year, was nominated by the Gastrointestinal (GI) physicians for the care of patients having GI procedures. The staff was recognized by Proctor and Gamble and the Society of Gastrointestinal Nurses and Associates as team winners.

Dermatologist Joins Aesthetic Center

The Aesthetic Center has added a Board-certified Dermatologist. Phung M. Huynh, MD, was an asst. prof. of Dermatology and UConn assistant residency director. She is a graduate of the Univ. of Calif. Davis School of Medicine and completed residency at NY Medical College. She has expertise in skin cancer, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, rosacea, photoaging and rejuvenation. 'Green' Medical Building

This fall the Torrey Corp, a  for-profit subsidiary of Milford Hospital's parent, breaks ground on the second building in the Medical park on Boston Post Road it opened a year ago. The new 33,000 square-foot "green" building, tentatively to open in fall 2010, will allow for the expansion of community, non-hospital medical services, such as Cardiology and Orthopedic specialists. The existing 17,000 facility, also owned and leased by Torrey, includes the Walk-in Urgent Care Center, now used by over 1000 people a month, and medical offices. Later this year the Urgent Care Center is expected to be expanded, since demand far exceeded initial expectations. MDs Select Home Care Plus

Seems more area physicians see Home Care Plus as the answer to their patient’s needs, reports Joyce Lindsay, the visiting nurse administrator. The Milford Hospital-affiliated agency primarily serves Milford, West Haven, Orange. For more information, click here.

Urologists Join Milford Hospital Medical Staff

Six Urology doctors have been added to the medical staff at Milford Hospital. Hematology/Oncology Doctors Join Staff

Five Hematology/Oncology doctors have been added to the medical staff at Milford Hospital. Guided Breast Biopsy

Thanks to the Milford Hospital Auxiliary, radiologists at Milford Hospital have added MRI Guided Breast Biopsy — a non-surgical, recise method to allow biopsies of even the smallest detectable masses in the breast — to its arsenal for fighting breast cancer. “MRI-guided breast biopsies, which are faster than open biopsies, allow for the biopsy of lesions that may be visible only on MRI and cannot be felt on a physical exam,” said Susan Marlatt, MD. “MRI-guided breast biopsy is less invasive than open surgery for acquiring tissue samples that offer definitive pathological results, without requiring general anesthesia or significant scarring.”

 

Voice Recognition Pilot

Imagine an MDs words appear on the screen as they speak. Milford Hospital began a pilot voice recognition program to create medical progress notes. Several hospital MDs are using the system to also create Admission and Consult Notes, and Discharge Summaries. The system is integrated with Meditech, the hospital’s advanced Health Information System. “During the pilot program, we'll evaluate the advantages and challenges of the new system,” said Lloyd Friedman, MD, VP of Medical Affairs. “Meditech, designed to improve continuity of patient care, began in 2004 and then expanded to most clinical and administrative areas,” said Lynn Christensen, director, Information Technology.

Emergency Mgr, Infection Control Nurse Named

Court Curneen, RN, was named manager of Milford Hospital’s Emergency Care Center and Walk-in urgent care center. Both provide about 40,000 annual visits a year. He has experience in emergency and ICU settings at an academic Level I tertiary hospital (Yale-New Haven Health). He has been a flight nurse, paramedic supervisor, and nursing supervisor at Bradley Memorial and Milford Hospitals in. He received his RN from Duchess Community College and is pursuing his MSN. He is certified in emergency nursing (CEN) and has BLS, ACLS, TNCC, ENPC, and NRP certificates. Click here for information on Emergency Services.

Kathryn Cusano, RN, BS was named Infection Control Nurse. She has experience as an infection control nurse and in quality improvement at Yale-New Haven Health. She was certified in infection control, has experience in oncology/bone marrow transplantation and has certifications in oncology and chemotherapy. She is pursuing her master’s.
